Intertextuality

Intertextuality - The shaping of a text's meaning by other texts. Texts and meanings in relationship to each other.

For this section of the book, I looked through the D section of the dictionary. I used the word dictionary as the word for this section. I matched the meaning of dictionary with the meaning of dictionary.com. I created a webpage from dictionary. com out of a paper dictionary. I compared the amount of information given from the paper dictionary, to the information given in the online dictionary. It continues to tell a message about advancements in technology.

Assemblage

Assemblage - a collection of found objects that create a single three dimensional composition.

For this section of the book, I used the C section of the dictionary. I was looking for ways to integrate Assemblage into the words of the dictionary. I had the idea of finding objects in the room and assembling them to their corresponding spot in the dictionary. For example, if i found cord in my room, I would attach it next to the word cord in the dictionary. However, living in the dorm i had very few items to work with, there were not enough interesting objects in the room that started with the letter C. So I decided I would use just one word. I noticed that I still had chocolate from valentines day, so I attached the foil from the chocolate to the page and came up with this.

Project 1

Snail Mask

Often, a person can get lost in music and block out the rest of the world. People become sheltered and confide in their music. I used organic shapes from life that are connected to the idea of shelter and protection. The shell and cocoon were the first things to come to mind. I took this context and applied it to my mask.

While wearing the mask, people can listen to the music and lose themselves.

Negative Space

Negative Space - The shape and space around an object created by the positive space

Positive Space - The shape and space of an object

Since I started with the letter A, I saw fit to use the letters of the alphabet for each section of the project. I used all the pages of the b section of the dictionary.

For this section, the roles are reversed. Instead of the positive shape being the subject and the negative space around it, I cut the positive shape out of the page and made the negative shape the subject.

Automatism (Cut Up Technique)

Automatism - Allows chance to play a major role in the composition, drawing on the unconscious mind, states of trance, or dreams. Uses spontaneity to create a piece of art.

Cut Up Technique - Cutting words out of a written piece of work, then rearranging them to create entirely new phrases and meanings.

Starting with the first section of the dictionary, the A's, I cut the pages into 8 sections.

A stack of A's

With no idea of where this was going, I started putting pieces together. I decided that since the pieces came from a dictionary, I would create a new word.

I selected the squares of pages at random and amended them to each other, overlapping words on top of words.

When I overlapped the words, I tried to make it sound like a real word. But as I overlapped more words on top of that, the meaning became confused

The end result, a new word

Visual•lagrar•i•ascent•om•pu•taras•so•ciac•tu•ash•ram•gel•i•cas•suap•pend•asham•y•lase

And while the word is ridiculously long and makes absolutely no sense, the process of getting the word is what I want to note.
